Occupy idle brains and hands

Published:Friday | August 11, 2017 | 8:00 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

The murder of 17-year-old Mickolle Moulton, a graduate of Meadowbrook High School, is the latest symbolism of the effect the high crime rate is having on our country.

Crime is destroying the prospects of the very young and ambitious among us who would wish to have a future in Jamaica. We simply cannot continue like this, where increasing numbers of our young people continue to find migration an attractive idea.

There should be emphasis on bringing to book those parents whose children rarely attend school and end up on the streets as window washers or plain idlers. It is from this kind of environment that criminality develops. This environment is pervasive across all our towns and urban areas.

We need to address the source of criminality. To do otherwise is to lose the lives of the many other Mickolle Moultons at the instances of young men whose minds remain barren and whose idle hands find comfort in the guns.
