Make Jamaica safe again
THE EDITOR, Sir:
When I was a boy, growing up in Jamaica, serious crime was seriously punished, with the result that such crime was rare, and we could walk anywhere in Kingston, and feel completely safe.
It seems that after Independence, serious punishment was no longer “politically correct”, with the consequence that when one mentions “Jamaica” in the USA, it seems that the next word mentioned is inevitably “CRIME!”
What a tragedy for the people living in Jamaica! Think how much better the tourist industry would be if that “CRIME” label could be removed.
The prosperity of the island, the standard of living and quality of life of Jamaicans would be considerably improved.
I recently asked a former schoolmate of mine from our Excelsior days whether she would ever consider going back to Jamaica to live and she firmly replied: “NO! Too much crime and too many murders!”
Isn’t it time for a change?
Isn’t it past time to make Jamaica...Jamaica again? Don’t we owe that to ourselves and to our children?
