Reid, Thwaites agree to partnership on PEP
Former Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education Elaine Foster-Allen has been invited by Minister of Education, Youth and Information Senator Ruel Reid to sit on the National Standards Curriculum (NSC) and Primary Exit Profile (PEP) Review Committee.
The NSC/PEP Review Committee, which comprises six teachers who were selected by the Jamaica Teachers' Association, other distinguished educators the Church and parent groups, is tasked with reviewing curriculum materials and test items, along with the overall administration of the NSC and PEP to drive improvement.
The invitation was extended by the minister during a meeting with Opposition spokesman on education Reverend Ronald Thwaites; Foster-Allen, who is chairperson of the People's National Party Education and Training Re-imagined Commission; and principal of Padmore Primary in St Andrew, Keisha Hayle.
The meeting, which was held at the Ministry of Education's Heroes Circle office last Thursday, was convened by Senator Ruel Reid.
Preparations for PEP
He outlined to Thwaites and his team the state of operations regarding the preparations for PEP.
Reid noted that he was pleased that Foster-Allen will sit on the PEP Review Panel.
During the meeting, suggestions were put forward by the team from the Opposition, that the ministry has agreed to review subject to consultation with all stakeholders. For his part, Thwaites noted that having had the meeting with the minister and his team, he believes the actions taken by the ministry are a significant step in the right direction. He committed that he will support the efforts of the ministry.
Both the ministry and the Opposition concurred that a national and united front on PEP would be more beneficial as the country moves forward with one voice to support Jamaica's biggest partners in education - our children.
